We are seeking to establish a pool of Secondary Generalist Relief Teachers for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2025 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2026. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

Northam SHS is working to adopt the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) and Restorative Practice 2.0 The BSEM is based in trauma-informed positive education, a strength-based approach designed to inform and guide teacher practice and student learning, engagement, and psychosocial functioning. In Restorative Practice 2.0 the primary focus is on repairing harm and restoring relationships. The objective is to bring individuals impacted by a conflict or wrongdoing together, fostering communication, empathy, and understanding. The emphasis lies in resolving issues collaboratively and instilling a sense of responsibility and accountability.

Located in the heart of the picturesque Avon Valley, Northam is home to a diverse range of tourist and heritage attractions, including hot air ballooning, cultural experiences, wildflowers, tours & trails, historic buildings, horse racing, and much, much more. The Avon River flows through the town and has an abundance of bird life, including the unique white swan. Spanning the river next to the Visitor Centre is the pedestrian suspension bridge, which is the longest of its kind in Australia.

The Role

Northam Senior High School is seeking a highly motivated, experienced Secondary Generalist Teachers committed to achieving outstanding educational outcomes for all students.

The ability to differentiate curriculum and implement innovative approaches to improve outcomes for both high and low achieving students is a key element to this position. The successful applicant will ideally be able to apply the strategies of differentiated instruction and explicit teaching. They should ideally incorporate current and emerging technologies to best meet the needs of our students.

The suitable applicants will ideally be highly motivated; student and relationship focused and able to provide engaging, innovate, relevant and meaningful learning experiences. They will utilise innovative initiatives and be able to work effectively within a dynamic team. This will involve reflecting and assessing the effectiveness of teaching practices and cultivating a safe learning environment. This extends to utilising evidence-based teaching practices whilst employing a range of assessment and reporting methods. With effective interpersonal skills, they will work closely with students, teachers and the community to instil rigour, resilience and pride, allowing students to achieve to their full potential.

Ideally, suitable applicants should be willing to teach across a range of Learning Areas for students from Years 7 to 12. Having a public secondary school experience will be highly regarded, however primary teachers are also encouraged to apply. The role would suit applicants who are highly organised and have excellent written and oral communication skills. Teachers who can create a safe and productive learning environment that caters for the range of needs so all students may achieve and progress are strongly encouraged to apply.

Suitable applicants should ideally have the ability to work collaboratively to plan and implement effective teaching and learning plans. There’s an opportunity to provide excellence in creating and maintaining supportive and safe learning environments and provide educational opportunities and activities which enable students to achieve their highest potential. With effective interpersonal skills, suitable applicants will work closely with students, colleagues, and the community to achieve the best educational outcomes for students.

Suitable applicants will ideally:

  • have experience in the delivery of multi-disciplinary units of work underpinned by the WA Curriculum;
  • deliver a differentiated curriculum which meets the needs of all students and have an expectation that all students can reach their potential;
  • have experience with Literacy and/or Numeracy Support;
  • possess a love for teaching and a passion for education;
  • foster inclusivity and challenge in teaching programs;
  • have a strong ability to establish positive relationships with students, staff, and the broader school community.

The school has also commenced work on an Instructional Strategies Framework so a deep understanding of “Teaching for Impact” would be beneficial.

Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.

Mobility appointments for permanent metropolitan and south west teachers

Eligible permanent teachers who hold a substantive teaching position in a North or South Education Region school, or a South West Education Region school* may elect to undertake this role as a 3-year mobility appointment, with a right of return to their substantive position. At the cessation of the 3-year mobility appointment, teachers can elect to return to their substantive role, or transfer permanently into this school.
